Indigenous people first occupied the territory of Long Beach, with Tongva being the dominant tribe. The 16th century heralded the arrival of Spanish explorers and the gradual departure of the Tongva tribe. Spanish Soldier Manuel Nieto was granted Rancho Nos Nietos by the Spanish Empire’s King Carlos III in 1784. Following the United States Conquest of California, Jotham Bixby was selected to manage Rancho Los Cerritos (home to the present-day Long Beach) by Flint, Bixby, and Company. Rancho Los Cerritos was eventually sold to William E. Willmore, who also failed and sold it to a Los Angeles syndicate named “Long Beach Land and Water Company.” They renamed the community Long Beach. Long Beach was incorporated as a city in 1897. The city experienced growth as a seaside resort. The Pike was a popular amusement zone on the West Coast between 1902 and 1969. It offered games, food, and rides such as the Cyclone Racer roller coaster and the Ferris wheel. Gradually the oil industry, Navy shipyard, and port became major economic players in the city. The discovery of oil in the Long Beach Oil Field made Long Beach a major oil producer in the country. The field was the most productive in the world in the 1920s.

With close to 290 sunny days annually and average temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees, almost every day is sunny in Long Beach. And what do you do when the weather is perfect? You go to the beach, and thankfully, Long Beach is home to many of them. Visit Belmont Shore Beach to engage in a game of sand volleyball, sunbathe, or swim. Watch as your kids have fun at Mother’s Beach, which features toys, green spaces, concessions, and a protected swimming area. Kitesurf or watch the sunset at the Long Beach City Beach along Ocean Boulevard.
Visit Parks
