History of Alameda County California
History of Alameda County California
Alameda was formed in March 1853 from the bigger part of Contra Costa County and a small section of Santa Clara County. At its formation, the county seat was in Alvarado, which is currently Union City. The county seat was later moved to San Leandro in 1856 before its destruction by the 1868 earthquake on the Hayward Fault. Between 1872 to 1875, the seat was later moved to Brooklyn town, which is currently a part of Oakland.
The county, which is currently an urban region, was first established as a trolley car suburb of San Francisco between the late 90s and early 20s. Historically, the area has progressed from being a Native American ancestral land to Mexican and Spanish ranches and orchards to multiple city centers and suburbs to the current most populous and exciting county.

Alameda is a Spanish word meaning a “grove of poplars or a tree in a lined street.” Initially, the name was used to describe the willow and sycamore trees that grew along the river banks. The early Spanish travelers used these trees to remind them of the road lined with trees. The English translation, “Poplar Grove Creek,” resulted in the mainstream “Alameda Creek” that flows throughout the county.
