History

Orange County has a history that can be traced back to as far back as 1769, when the first Spanish expedition of Gasper de Portola entered what is now Orange County. The land previously occupied by Tongva, Juaneno, and Luiseno quickly became occupied by the Spaniards. Another Spanish Expedition led by Junipero Serra named the area Valle de Santa Ana (Valley of Saint Anne). Within a short period, the missions San Gabriel in 1771 and San Juan Capistrano in 1776 had taken control of the area, grazing cattle, sheep and horses in the county till the 1830s.

Under Spanish rule, all lands were handed over to the king as his property; however, a few soldiers received grazing permits. One of the grazing permit receivers was Manuel Nieto, who was permitted to occupy all the land between Santa Ana and San Gabriel Rivers. Along the line, several soldiers such as Juan Pablo Grijalva, Jose Antonio Yorba, and his son-in-law Juan Pablo Peralta received grazing permits.

Mexico gained Independence from Spain in 1821 and took California as one of its regions. After its independence, the Mexican government awarded authorized land grants of 44,000 acres to Mexican citizens who were supposed to use and improve the land. This led to most Orange County being given out as part of a ranch.

Orange County became a part of the United States at the end of the Mexican-American war 1848, made official by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The Gold Rush of 1849 played a huge part in the growth of Orange as it brought in a lot of settlers to California. This led to an increased market for the ranchers' cattle, which were sold as beef to feed hard-working miners.
