Though Riverside County itself is barely more than 1¼ centuries old, the region has been inhabited for as long as history and archaeology can track. When it was settled by Europeans, the region was the territory of the Cahuilla, Cupeño and Luiseño tribes. Europeans first arrived in 1819, when a Mission San Luis Rey de Francia estancia (farm) was established in a Luiseño village called Temescal.
Much of what is now Riverside County passed into the control of Mexico in 1833. When that country became independent from Spain. By the 1850s, the lands were part of the California Territories. As the population expanded, the original 27 California counties were divided many times, and Riverside Country was created in 1893.
Since that time, Riverside County has seen a great deal of evolution. It became the site of the March Air Reserve Base in 1918, which is now used by the California Air National Guard.
