History of Long Beach

Long Beach Municipal Auditorium 1967 in California

The area was formerly an Indian trading camp. In 1542, a Spanish explorer, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, anchored off the coast. The area became part of Rancho Nietos in 1784, which was later divided by a Spanish land grant into two portions known as Rancho Los Alamitos and Rancho Los Cerritos. Los Alamitos had an area of 43.75 square miles, while the sister, Los Cerritos, had 42.2 square miles, which made up most of what is now called Long Beach. The city was renamed Long Beach by the original residents of the foiled Willmore City after its long, wide beaches and was officially incorporated on December 13, 1897. The Pacific Electric trolley was introduced to the city, which caused it to grow both as a commercial center and a resort. During its early history, the industry of the city was centered on the oil industry and the Navy shipyard. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the city was known for its flourishing oil industry and was home to many immigrants in the 1960s.
