Los Angeles County has a history that can be traced to as far back as the 1500s when a sea Voyage sailed into Santa Monica Bay. Captain Juna Rodriguez Cabrillo headed the Spanish voyage. Before the arrival of the Europeans, the area was occupied by Tongva and Indians who had lived a stable life. Spain's reign over California ended in 1822, while Mexico took over the reins when it gained independence from Spain in 1821.
The Battle of Rio San Gabriel between Mexico and the United States led to the U.S. taking control of Los Angeles in 1847. The Treaty of Cahuenga was signed to end the Mexican-American war. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which made the ceding of California by Mexico to the United States formal, was signed in 1848.

Name History
On arrival at the site in the 1500s, Capt. Juan noticed the smoke from Indian fires, which prompted him to name the place Bahia de Los Fumos, which means Bay of Smokes. Over two centuries later, California Gov. Felipe de Neve and a group of 11 families established a pueblo(town) near a river and named it Pueblo de la Reina de Los Ángeles (The Village of the Queen of the Angels). The name was later shortened to the popularly known Los Angeles.

Los Angeles County, popularly known as LA County, has over ten million(2020 census), easily making it the most populous county in the United States. Its population is greater than 40 of the 50 states in America. Its county seat, Los Angeles, is the second-most populous city in the United States and the most populous in California.
