History of California

The state of California incorporated Fresno County in 1856, eight years after the California Constitutional Committee recommended the creation of the original 18 counties. The county was part of Mariposa, Tulare, and Merced counties. Traditionally, the area was home to the Mono and Yokuts people and later the Spaniards. It became part of the United States in 1846 after the conclusion of the Mexican War.

Fresno County residents brought electricity, irrigation, and agriculture towards the end of the 19th century. Industries also grew, including the raisin industry and extensive grain and cattle ranches by Esterby and Clovis Cole. The two individuals are also known as the “Wheat King of the Nation,” and the county has become the leading agricultural region in the United States.

The Historical Society in Fresno County has also worked to bring heritage to the region for over 100 years. Fresno is a Spanish name that signifies “ash tree.” The county received its name because of the abundance of mountain ash or ash trees that characterized the region. People named the county Fresno, and one of the major cities in the county has the same name.

Interestingly, the people in the region named the county after two ash trees that served as the landmark for the area. The trees grew near Minkler Town on the Kings River.
