Alameda County California Real Estate

Known as "The Island City," Alameda County consists of three islands and a small portion of the mainland. However, it is not the entire island that belongs to Alameda; a small part of a former runway at Alameda Naval Air Station has extended over the county line into San Francisco Bay, which belongs to San Francisco City and County.

There was a time when Alameda County was your only option when you couldn't afford even one-bedroom condominiums in San Francisco. As a result, you were forced to think about Alameda, a place many Bay Area residents overlook. Unfortunately, as the city developed rapidly, Alameda homes got more costly.

Yet, thanks to its rich community and exceptional public schools, Alameda is among the best places to raise a family in the bay.

The Spanish arrived in Alameda County in the 1700s and unsettled the Ohlone Indians. In 1853, a city was established. In 1820, the Spanish king who claimed California granted Rancho San Antonio to Luis Peralta, this included the peninsula. A year later, Mexico gained independence from Spain and confirmed the grant.

Alameda opened in 1869 at the time of commissioning the Transcontinental Railroad's terminus. Following the fire and earthquake of 1906 in San Francisco, San Franciscans allegedly moved to Alameda. By the mid-1940s, Alameda had become a Navy town throughout World War II, providing housing for workers.

Among Spanish speakers, "álamo" is the origin of the word "Alameda," which refers to a "grove of poplar trees.” The term "Alameda" became a generic term for a shady public promenade in the 1700s due to its suitability for such a purpose. The name became official for the city in 1853 after a popular vote.
