Initially, the proposed county name was Mt. Diablo County, but due to public influence, the name was changed. Contra Costa County's Spanish name means "the other side of the coast" due to its location. The southern parts of this county were given up in 1853 to form the present-day Alameda County. These portions included all the bayside areas opposite of San Francisco and northern parts of Santa Clara County.

Around 22.8% of households in the county were made up of individuals, and 8% of them had people aged above 65 years. The average family size was 3.23, and the average household size was 2.72.

The median income for a family was $73,038 in 2002, which rose to $87,435 in 2007.
