History of Orange County California

History of Orange County California

Historic LA

The Orange County area was inhabited by several Native American groups. However, an expedition was conducted by the Spanish in 1769 who named the area “Valle de Santa Ana.” The first permanent European settlement was in 1776 by two men, who were granted some land by the Mexican government.

In 1850, Orange County had over 100 vineyards which promoted wineries. Viticulture had grown increasingly important for the economy of the county. This tradition is still very alive today and continues to steadily grow. However, the 1860s faced a severe drought that brought in many difficulties and set back some of these flourishing industries.

In the 20th century, this metropolis saw rapid growth in smaller industries and fluctuation in the bigger industries. It was the age of modernization of this city.

Orange County Welcome Sign California

The name Orange County does not have a very fancy history, as we would like to imagine. The name was given to the region in order to promote the area, and it worked. After its initiation in 1889, people started coming and settling in the county for the opportunity of growing citrus in the fertile lands.

The popularity of the county rose as the region became abundant with orange trees, described as a “second gold rush”. Soon, the popularity reached such a peak that land became too expensive to keep orange orchards. So, as oranges started depleting, people started settling in. Oranges left but the name remained.
