The county developed fast, particularly during the Gold Rush era, when it served as the center for agriculture and commerce. Sacramento was integral in linking the east and west of the United States. The construction of the Central Pacific Railroad started in the area, and it continued east to connect with the famous Union Pacific Railroad in Utah in 1869. It was the first intercontinental railroad that served as a major transportation route.

The county saw significant growth in the automobile industry due to the construction of roads and bridges such as the Lincoln Highway. Sacramento County had airfields and a pilot training school during World War I and II, and aviation became a vital part of its development. The region has grown to become one of the best counties in California.

Sacramento means "Lord's Supper" or "Sacrament?" Captain Gabriel Moraga gave the county its name after the Sacramento River. He was a Sonoran-born California explorer and an army officer. He discovered a river and named it Rio de Los Sacramentos in 1808. Locals decided to shorten and Anglicize it into Sacramento.

Captain Moraga is one of the most renowned Spanish explorers like his father. He also contributed to naming many rivers, cities, and counties in Northern California. The county's namesake, the Sacramento River, forms the region's western border.
