Fresno, CA, was once inhabited by the Yokuts and Miwok people. They were the only ones to inhabit the region until halfway through the 19th century, although Pedro Fages did settle there in 1772. People only created Fresno county after the California Gold Rush in 1856, naming it after the magnificent ash trees lining the San Joaquin River. The Spanish word Fresno means ash tree. In 1871, the city introduced the first irrigation system for its farmers, with Moses J. Church forming the Fresno Canal and Irrigation Company. As the city grew, it became a center for many industries because of the Central Pacific Railroad, with agriculture as its mainstay. Fresno became an incorporated city in 1885. Between 1909 to 1931, Fresno experienced the development of the iconic Temple Beth Israel and the Fresno Traction Company, which operated 47 streetcars in the city. Over the next few decades, Visa Inc. placed Fresno on the map for creating the first credit card. Fresno was also known for its dance style called "popping" in the late 1970s, and the famous song "Waling into Fresno," written by Hall of Fame guitarist Bill Aiken. Fresno was ranked as one of the most populated cities in the U.S. in 1960, with 134,000 people. It continued to boom over the next 30 years, and in 1990 its population had reached 354,000, and in the census of 2000, 428,000. Its ranking was 37 for the most highly populated U.S. city by then.
