Named after el Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe (meaning "the Town of Saint Joseph on the Guadalupe"), San Jose was founded as California's first civilian settlement by Jose Joaquin Moraga on November 29, 1777. Moraga did this under the orders of Antonio Maria de Bucareli y Ursua, Viceroy of New Spain. The city served as a strategic location along El Camino, linking the military fortifications at the San Francisco Presidio and Monterey Presidio and the California mission network. The territory of San Jose was moved approximately a mile south (centered on the Pueblo Plaza) due to severe flooding in 1791. San Jose was formally ceded to the United States after the Mexican-American in 1847. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 made the ceding official as part of the Mexican Cession. San Jose was incorporated as a California city alongside Benicia and San Diego on March 27, 1850. Josiah Belden, a member of the Bartleson Party, was made the city's first mayor. San Jose was briefly made California's first state capital, and legislators met at a now-demolished site from 1849 to 1851. San Jose experienced massive growth between 1900 and 1910. The city was the center for innovation, pioneering invention, and impact in heavier-than-flight and lighter-than-air.

Away from burgers, San Jose's culinary scene has provisions for palates of all flavors, but Mexican and Vietnamese food in the city particularly stand out. While Vietnamese food, pho, isn't hard to find in the city, Pho Kim Long has the city's best pho. The cash-only restaurant is affordable and loved by locals. Craving Tacos and burritos? Head to the cash-only La Costa restaurant, which sits on Alum Rock Ave. And oh, I should let you know the burritos are as big as newborn babies. Seafood? Make a stop at The Fish Market restaurant, which is a popular destination for field trips thanks to its live lobster tank and true fish market feel. The restaurant offers cooked fish and sushi. Parks

San Jose is home to over 200 unique and breathtaking venues for perfect outdoor relaxation. The city also houses over 60 miles of scenic trails useful for hiking. California's Great America is a lovely place to spend an outdoor day with your family. It features an amusement park, a waterpark, and even a lazy river. Love playing golf? Head to either Santa Teresa or Coyote Creek to access a full golf course. For minigolf, check out Golfland. Go on a hike in the foothills at either IBM in South San Jose or Quicksilver in Almaden. Sports

Love sports? Then you will love living in San Jose. While San Jose itself has only two professional sports teams, the city is part of the Bay Area, including San Francisco and Oakland. San Francisco and Oakland boast four other major league teams, which will leave you spoilt for options when choosing who to support. The San Jose Sharks are the locals' favorite teams as the city changes color whenever the Sharks play a home game. The Sap center and its environs are usually filled with fans in teal and black outfits ready to cheer the Sharks to victory. Pre-match and post-match celebrations for major victories usually go on till daybreak in and around Santa Clara.

The San Jose Earthquakes, who play in the Major League Soccer, are the city's second team. The Earthquakes have won the MLS Cup twice, and the Supporters Shield twice. Even if you do not like soccer, you should watch the California Classico, a derby between the Earthquakes and LA Galaxy. The tension in the atmosphere and level of noise from both sets of fans is indescribable.
