History of Corpus Christi

History of Corpus Christi

History has it that a Spanish explorer known as Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda discovered a semi-tropical bay on the festival day of Roman Catholicism. The bay and the city that grew in the area took the feast day’s name, celebrating the “Body of Christ.” The discovered Pineda spot is now home to Corpus Christi, the largest city in Texas. With key industries like tourism, shipping, agriculture, military, education and healthcare, the city has developed into a local hub for marketing, processing and distributing farming produce. The city started as a trading post. Founded by Colonel Henry Lawrence Kinner, an explorer and a colonizer, the small settlement was referred to as Kinner’s Ranch. The area remained an obscure settlement until the US troops set camps in the area to prepare for the Mexican War. A year later, the area was incorporated and named Corpus Christi due to the increasing demand for postmark letters. The arrival of railroads stimulated a land boom in the area. However, the exploitation of gas, the discovery of the Saxtet oil field and the development of a deepwater port marked the economic foundation of today’s modern city.
