Collin County's 851 square miles are entirely within the Blackland Prairie region of Texas, except for a small piece of its western edge. With a height ranging from 450 to 700 feet above sea level, the county's landscape is mainly level to slightly rolling. Collin County's settlement can be separated into two phases. The first occurred between 1840 and 1860, in the early years of the county's history. The next phase started with the entrance of railroads and continued beyond.
