History of Bexar County Texas

History of Bexar County Texas

Harris County History

On December 20, 1836, Bexar County was established, including nearly the whole western portion of the Republic of Texas. This included the contested areas in west New Mexico northward to Wyoming. After becoming a state, it was divided into 128 counties.

San Antonio de Béxar, one of Texas' 23 Mexican municipalities (administrative divisions) at its independence, was the county's inspiration. San Antonio de Béxar, previously known as Villa de San Fernando de Béxar, was the province of Texas's first civil administration. In 1731, 55 Canary Islanders settled near the system of missions erected around the San Antonio River's source, becoming the community.

The Presidio San Antonio de Béjar, a Spanish military garrison guarding the missions, inspired the new city. The Presidio, located near the San Pedro Springs, was established in 1718 and is named after Viceroy Balthasar Manuel de Ziga y Guzmán Sotomayor y Sarmiento, the Duke of Béjar's second son (a town in Spain). San Antonio de Béjar was also the name of the contemporary city of San Antonio in the United States state of Texas.

Wisdom from a Bexarian I have lived most of my years in Bexar County, and I can honestly say that I adore it! It's ecstatic to come across such diversity because southern friendliness is always there. There is an unspoken, implicit understanding of the community's dos and don'ts. Plus, the neighborhood is non-discriminatory and accepts all with open arms. When it comes to getting around, you can use a car, go for a walk, take the bus, or use a bike-sharing app. Talk about homes; most people in Bexar County own their places. No wonder many families, including mine, are proud to call it home, and you won't regret doing the same.
