The region that would one day become known as the Balcones Escarpment, and later Travis County in Texas, has been inhabited more or less continuously for 11,000 years or more. However, we do know that by the time Europeans began to settle in the area, it belonged to the Lipan Apache, Comanche and the Tonkawa peoples.
The Spanish Empire claimed the entirety of what would become Texas in the 1600s, but barely explored Travis County. No attempt was made to settle or control it until three temporary missions were set up near Barton Springs in 1730. Mexico broke away from Spain in 1821, and colonists from many nations were encouraged to settle in Texas, many of them of American origin. In 1836 the republic of Texas became independent from Mexico. In 1839 the capital was moved to Austin, which had previously been known as Waterloo, Texas.

Travis county was named after William Barret "Buck" Travis. Travis was in turns a lawyer and a soldier in the Texas Army. He died in the Texas Revolution, as the leader of the Texas forces at the battle of the Alamo. He had risen to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
