The city of Chandler was discovered by Dr. Alexander John Chandler. Dr. Chandler was the first veterinary surgeon to settle in the Arizona Territory. He settled on a ranch south of Mesa, where he studied irrigation engineering in 1891. By 1900, he had acquired 73km² of land and began drawing up plans for a townsite.
