Pima County, found in the South-central region of Arizona, was created in 1864. But the county traces human activity back to as early as 1690 by European settlers, the Spanish in particular.
Pima County is the oldest inhabited county in its territory. It has the largest population as opposed to the primarily uninhabited area to the north, where Native American tribes still live. However, most of the county's population is centered in the Tucson area, the county seat. Both youngsters and retirees find their Pima County homes here.
Tucson became part of the United States after the Gadsden Purchase in 1854. Tucson is also considered the oldest incorporated city in the US, dating to 1877. This area saw significant changes a few years later when the American Indian war ended, and as the mines opened, it ushered in the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad. What’s Behind the Name Pima County, Arizona?
The county is named after the famous Pima Native American tribe, who, as we know, are historically indigenous to this region. The Pima people call themselves, in their native language, Akimel O'odham, which means river people.
According to historical accounts, the Pima farmed the Salt River Valley centuries ago, creating an intricate irrigation system. To this day, visitors and residents alike are invited to annual open-house events at the Salt River Pima community’s Huhugam Ki Museum where artifacts, pottery, and baskets are on display.
