Chandler is a young town at just 110 years old. It was founded in 1912 by Dr. Alexander John Chandler when he acquired 18,000 acres of land around his own ranch. A few years later after the town was founded, the first grass golf course in Arizona was created and the Chandler High School was built. In 1920, Chandler was incorporated with the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. By the 1950s, Chandler had a population of just 3,800 people, but by the early 1980s had grown to more than 300,000 residents. Since this time, Chandler has grown steadily to the pace of the rest of the Phoenix Metro Area. In fact, new suburban residential areas now occupy most of the old agricultural land. By the 1990s, Chandler had become the fastest-growing municipality in the country, and in 2010 it was named an All-American City by the National Civic League.
