The history of Las Vegas, Nevada, can be traced to May 15, 1905. The year was when 110 acres of land were situated between Main Street to the west, Fifth Street Las Vegas Boulevard to the east, Stewart Avenue on the north, and Garces Avenue to the south auctioned off by the railroad company. After the Salt Lake, San Pedro, and Los Angeles railroads were completed, Las Vegas was set up as a railroad connecting Salt Lake City with Southern California. When work began on the Boulder Dam, now known as the Hoover Dam, urbanization started in 1931, bringing a lot of young male workers, for whom casinos and theaters were built, mainly by the Mafia. In 1829, The city was named Las Vegas by Rafael Rivera, who was the first individual of European ancestry to enter Las Vegas. In 1821, he scouted the area as part of Armijo Antonio's expedition to open up a trade road, the Old Spanish Trail, between New Mexico and California. The valley "Las Vegas," named by Rivera, is translated into "The meadows" to appreciate the spring-watered grasses that grew in the nutrient-rich desert soil with adequate water supply.
