What is now known as Clark County was originally part of the Mexican Territory of Alta, California. New Mexican merchant Antonio Armijo established the first route for mule trains and herds of livestock to Alta California from Nuevo Mexico via Clark County in 1829. The United States acquired the area that is now Clark County during the Mexican-American War. Mormons established routes and settlements in Clark County during the 1850s. All the area that is now Clark County was part of Mohave County, Arizona Territory in 1863. In 1865, it became part of Pah-Ute County, Arizona Territory, and later, in 1871, it became part of Lincoln County. On February 5, 1909, Clark County was formed by the Nevada Legislature by splitting it from a portion of Lincoln County. Tourism has been the main source of revenue in Clark County and has become Nevada’s major tourist destination. Clark County has jurisdiction over the popular Las Vegas Strip and has over 150,000 hotel rooms.
