Las Vegas was inhabited by Native American tribes for thousands of years. The petroglyphs and tools left behind by Paleo-Indians have been discovered in the Las Vegas Valley. The Anasazi and Paiute tribe also came much later and settled in camps around the mountains and within the valley. The story of modern Las Vegas starts properly with a young Mexican scout identified as Rafael Rivera, acknowledged as the first non-Native American to come into the valley. More credit, however, goes to Antonio Armijo, a trader who trooped into the valley in the company of sixty men as they sought a new route from Santa Fe to Los Angeles. When Armijo and his troop encountered the wetlands and the meadows, he described it on his map as Las Vegas, which is Spanish for "the meadows." John Charles Frémont is acknowledged as among the first Americans to set eyes on this land. He wrote much about it, and his writings were influential in inviting pioneer settlers. This is the man for whom Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas is named. William Bringhurst led a group of Mormon missionaries here in 1885. They quickly established a log fort and cultivated garden plots and fields of grain. They left a few years later, reportedly because of crop failure. Railroad developers arrived in 1890 and scouted a route that would connect Las Vegas to San Pedro, Salt Lake City, and Los Angeles. It was also meant to open up Las Vegas to other cities on the Pacific Coast. The rail finally arrived in 1905. The 20th century proved a game-changer for Las Vegas. The arrival of the railroad led to the sprouting of all kinds of businesses. Railroad investor William A. Clark purchased a chunk of land that he would later auction at a mouthwatering price. He used part of the proceeds to construct a pipeline and sink a well, ensuring that the town had a steady water supply. The city was officially founded in 1905 and incorporated in 1911. The legalization of casino gambling in 1931, the reduction of divorce requirement to six weeks, and the commencement of construction at Hoover Dam played a significant role in awakening Las Vegas. Gambling, licensed as gaming, and other forms of entertainment have been key economic drivers in Las Vegas.
