Why not consider buying a mobile home in Wilmington, DE?

Wilmington is the largest city in Delaware, and the county seat of New Castle County. Although it’s not Delaware’s state capital, it is nevertheless the center for much that goes on in the state. In particular, it has the state’s central business district.

However, it offers so much more that makes it so attractive as a place to live – a lovely downtown area full of colonial architecture, cultural and historic sites of interest, as well as a number of galleries, museums and theaters. It also has in excess of 500 acres of parks, with wonderful forests in close proximity as well as its own comprehensive network of hiking and cycling trails.

History of Wilmington

History of Wilmington

delaware history

Wilmington, built on the site of Fort Christina and the settlement Kristinehamn, was named as being the first Swedish settlement built in North America. As a result of these Swedish influences, the city also included several other Swedish settlements. Wilmington was initially settled by the Lenape Indians led by Chief Mattahorn. This was immediately prior to Henry Hudson sailing up the Delaware River in 1609. Settlers and traders from the Swedish South Company arrived in 1638, and they bought Maax-waas Unk (Wilmington) from Chief Mattahorn, building Fort Christina at the mouth of the river. This then became the New Sweden colony headquarters. Colonel Johan Printz ruled the colony as governor under Swedish law from 1643 to 1653. Swedish rule in North America then ended in 1664 when the British arrived. It was after several wars between the English and Dutch that the British then ruled. In 1739, King George II granted a charter changing the city’s name to Willington, after British Prime Minister Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington, from Sussex in England. The British remained ruling Wilmington until 1778. In 1800, Eleuthère Irénée du Pont emigrated to the United States from France. In 1802, DuPont began making gunpowder in a mill just outside Wilmington, becoming a key supplier to the U.S. military. The city grew quickly during the Civil War, and by 1868 was manufacturing more iron ships than the rest of the USA combined. It was considered the top city in the USA for gunpowder and second for carriages and leather. The city's first park system was also established in the 19th century. The two World Wars relied heavily on various Wilmington industries that operated 24/7 to meet the demand. In the 1980s, national financial institutions arrived in Wilmington following the 1981 Financial Center Development Act, seeing many national and international banks, including Bank of America, Barclays Capital One and Chase operating out of the city.
