History of Wilmington

History of Wilmington

delaware history

Wilmington, Delaware was founded by Swedish and Finnish settlers in 1638. It was originally named Fort Christina, after Queen Christina of Sweden. The colony was under the control of the Swedish government until 1655 when it was taken over by the Dutch. The King of England named the city Wilmington in 1739, presumably after the Earl of Wilmington who was the King's favorite. It officially became a city in the United States in 1832. Wilmington was an important industrial city in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The city's location on the Delaware River made it a perfect place for manufacturing and shipping. The Du Pont company was founded there in 1802, and other companies followed suit. Wilmington became known as the "Chemical Capital of the World." The city's manufacturing base began to decline in the mid-20th century, however, as the industry shifted to other parts of the country. Wilmington has since reinvented itself as a service-oriented city, with a thriving financial and legal sector. The city is also home to many cultural institutions, including the Grand Opera House and the Delaware Art Museum.
