History of Kentucky
History of Kentucky
The Kentucky region was occupied by indigenous people long before the Europeans arrived, and they left behind burial and ceremonial mounds, which are still visible in Kentucky even today. Northern Kentucky's rich history includes early pioneers like Simon Kenton, James Taylor Jr., and Daniel Boone. He saw the potential of the beautiful land they had discovered near the mouth of the Licking River.
In the 17th century, French and Spanish explorers arrived in Kentucky via the Mississippi River basin, while traders from the east arrived in the early 18th century, mainly via the Ohio River. Daniel Boone led a group of immigrants into Kentucky in 1775 and founded the town of Boonesborough. He also extended and improved the Cumberland Gap path to allow carts to pass through. The Wilderness Road was named after this path. Many settlers then used this road to establish known Kentucky.
Kentucky was an independent state until the Revolutionary War when Virginia annexed it. Kentucky's citizens soon want to form their government. They sought statehood and officially became the 15th state on June 1, 1792. Three days later, the state government was established at a Lexington bar. Governor Isaac Shelby was appointed, and a commission was formed to choose a permanent location for the state capital. On November 1, 1793, the General Assembly convened for the first time in Frankfort. Kentucky has witnessed many historical moments, like the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire tragedy of 1977, the Ohio River Flood of 1937, the historic Battle of Blue Licks, and the building of the Roebling Bridge.
