The city started as a military base for the United States Army in 1864. It took over from a previous military establishment known as Camp Collins found along the Cache la Poudre River. The facility was near the present-day Laporte. Before it was closed, Camp Collins was established during the Indian wars of 1860 to protect the Overland facility, which was by then one of the most crucial military bases. Fort Collins experienced its first population boom in 1872 when an agricultural colony was established in the area. This attracted hundreds of settlers who developed the southern side of the city. However, there was increased tension between the old inhabitants and new settlers, which caused political divisions. The divisions saw Fort Collins incorporated as a town in 1873. In the late 20th century, the city expanded rapidly to the south, capitalizing on the initial developments made by early settlers. The economic growth saw an increase in real estate for sale in Fort Collins, Colorado. There was also the introduction of several regional malls as the local economy thrived. In the 1980s, Fort Collins emerged as one of the most important cities in Colorado, becoming a political priority. This period saw the revitalization of the city's Old Town through the Downtown Development Authority. As more people moved to the city, many companies opened up, creating numerous employees opportunities.
