The city was created by Collis P. Huntington and Delos. W. Emmons. Collins marked the town as one of the most essential western termini of the Ohio and Chesapeake railway. Initially, the land was known as Halderby's Landing, named after the pioneer family that settled downstream of the Ohio River. The town was later incorporated as a city by the West Virginia State legislature. Huntington was the second American city after San Francisco to use power-driven cars. The railroad was the city’s largest employer and economic driver for a century. The Great Flood, which damaged properties worth five million, saw the fall of the booming period of the city. However, World War II brought another economic boom which ended along with the war. The urban extension and failure of steel manufacturing industries led to the drop in Huntington’s population. The city’s economic base shifted from manufacturing to focusing on tourism, education, and healthcare & biotechnology industries. Marshall University, St. Mary’s Medical Center, Cabell Huntington Hospital, and Amazon became and remained the leading employers in the city. These industries have fueled the economic growth of Huntington to what it is today.
