Once called “Montana City,” the replacement name, Denver, was chosen to honor James Denver, the governor of what was then the Kansas territory. The city was established during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush; Colorado enjoyed a major economic ascent because of the burgeoning mining industry within its abundant mountains.
