The city's initial growth was based on the sale of cotton of various forms in Huntsville. This was a major economic activity in the early years given the high demand for cotton both locally and internationally. The trade also benefited significantly from the railroad industries. Around that time, houses for sale in Huntsville, Alabama became highly valuable as many wealthy planters moved into the city. This also contributed to the city's extensive development.
